Finding Wonder: Our Family Escape to La Roche-en-Ardenne

After weeks of busy routines, we needed a break. Childhood memories of the Ardennes—hiking, castles, rivers—drew us to La Roche-en-Ardenne. Our first adventure? Exploring the Castle of Lavaux-Sainte-Anne. This Renaissance palace, once a medieval fortress, now delights visitors with wildlife exhibits, hunting lore, and hands-on crafts. Kids can dress up as knights or princesses, letting their imaginations run wild in the ancient towers. The massive keep definitely sets it apart from other "fairytale"-castles.
Settling into a cozy studio apartment, Le Quai Son, we were greeted with a bottle of local La Chouffe beer—a hint of Ardennes luxury. My eldest shouted "Dad! Come check this out!" My jaw dropped to the floor.
The balcony overlooked the river and the medieval castle ruins, a sight that never gets old.

This castle, with roots as a Roman fort and a Carolingian villa, has seen everything from the rule of John the Blind of Bohemia to Antoon of Burgundy. While it's a ruin now, the information has improved massively in the past few years. And they've opened a bar with local beers there (cash only). From there, we had an amazing view over the town and surrounding hills. It's hard to imagine how this entire place was razed to the ground in the second World War. Thinking about it - the town's WWII museum, packed with tanks and artifacts, is a must for anyone curious about the region’s wartime past.
Local Flavors & Riverside Evenings
Hungry after a day of exploring? The Ardennes won’t let you down.

We sampled cheese, sausage, and Lupulus Triple beer (one of my favourites) at the "Au quai son" restaurant, right under the appartment. However, the real treat was "Fritesse", a Belgian-style snack bar - or frituur, as we call those. Think Belgian fries, deep-fried meats, fresh burgers, but also Vol-au-vent (creamy chicken stew), stoofvlees (beef in beer sauce), and roasted chicken. Restaurant-quality food!
After dinner, we went on a stroll along the rive. The kids got some time in the park, and finally the castle’s ghostly light show capped off our evening.

The Legend of Berthe of La Roche
As dusk settled, the castle came to life with dramatic medieval music - and haunting lights. And so they told us the secrets of Berthe, the legendary lady of La Roche. Betrayed long ago, Berthe’s ghost is said to roam the ruins, searching for love and justice—a tale that adds a dash of mystery to every visit. The show takes place every night in summer, but around the 21st of july they add fireworks! Our boy didn't need the fireworks though - after the show, he fell asleep like a bear. Note; if you happen to go in autumn, they also host halloween walks there!
Family-Friendly Fun & Nature Trails
The next morning, we set out for Durbuy’s maize labyrinth—a hit with kids thanks to lively animations in Dutch and French. But the real magic of the Ardennes lies in its trails:
Hike through ancient forests and along rushing rivers
Fish in crystal-clear streams (just grab a local license)
Spot wildlife in the La Roche-en-Ardenne Wildlife Park
Discover hidden waterfalls and scenic overlooks
So I'll definitely will be going back with my boys to show them one of the few "wild" corners of Belgium. Or my wife, for a romantic escape from the daily rush.

La Roche-en-Ardenne: A Town in Transition
Driving back home with two snoring kids in the back, I couldn't help but reflect on this lovely town. It's wonderful mix of French and German culture - how typically Belgian. But clearly, the changing world, travel trends and the big floods of 2021 have hit the place pretty hard.
But while La Roche-en-Ardenne isn’t as bustling as in its heyday, a new generation of entrepreneurs is breathing life into its streets. There’s plenty to see, taste, and experience—without the crowds. That means more space to explore, more time to linger, and a deeper sense of connection with the region.
