Ghent: A City That Captivates All Year Round
Meet my wife (And kids)

Belgium is full of beautiful cities, but for me, Ghent stands out as one of the very best. It’s not just a place you visit—it’s a city you experience. Ghent buzzes with life, radiates charm, and knows how to reinvent itself in every season.
What makes Ghent so special is its vibrant atmosphere. The city is packed with unique boutiques, stylish shops, and a wide range of restaurants offering everything from Belgian classics to international flavors. Whether you’re looking for a cozy café or fine dining, Ghent delivers. Ps; If you like good coffee you should definitely visit mokkabon!

One of my absolute favorites is Gravensteen Castle, right in the heart of the city. This fortress never fails to impress, no matter how many times you’ve seen it. In winter, the castle becomes even more enchanting when its cellar transforms into a “Winter Wonder Bar,” where you can sip a drink in a fairytale-like setting. Climb to the top, and you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the city—a memory you won’t soon forget.
Also highly recommended if you're traveling with children. Our boys are crazy about the Gravensteen!
Ghent is worth visiting any time of year. In the summer, nothing beats strolling along the Leie River or relaxing at one of the many terraces by the water. The historic facades reflected in the river create a postcard-perfect scene. In winter, Ghent transforms into a warm and festive destination. The Christmas market lights up the city with countless stalls offering local delicacies and drinks. And speaking of drinks: don’t leave without trying a traditional jenever (a Belgian gin-like spirit). My personal favorites are the sweet and creamy flavors like chocolate or vanilla, but the stalls serve jenever in every color and taste imaginable. It’s the perfect way to warm up on a chilly evening.
Another reason Ghent is so easy to recommend? Traveling in Belgium by train is quick and convenient. Ghent is perfectly located between Brussels and Bruges, making it an effortless stop on any Belgian itinerary. From Brussels, you can be in Ghent in under 40 minutes, which makes it ideal for a day trip—or better yet, a few days to soak it all in.
Ghent truly has it all: history, gastronomy, energy, and charm that will make you feel welcome all year round. For me, it’s clear—Ghent is the best city to visit, in summer and winter alike.
