How the best Belgian canal adventure started with a Negroni

For a long time, I asked myself a simple question as the founder of Beardbarian Belgian Tours: What kind of travel experiences do we actually want to be known for?
In the travel industry, it’s easy to get caught in the volume trap; running back-to-back group tours, rushing between landmarks, and acting like a selective checklist is the same as a well-planned day. But true luxury travel isn't about doing more. It’s about alignment, pacing, and knowing when to change the plan.
As it turned out, one of the best matches for our private tour philosophy and B2B-partnerships wasn't born from cold calling, influencer marketing or visiting a network event. It arrived when I drank a Negroni in Ghent.
The Problem With Standardized Belgium Sightseeing
Here is the reality of exploring historic cities like Ghent and Bruges: on paper, a combined day tour looks completely reasonable. In practice, without the right local guide, it easily turns into a race against the clock.

It had been an intensive guiding day with a cruise excursion covering both Ghent and Bruges. While the guests had an hour of free time, I stepped into one of my favourite local spots in Ghent: Books & Booze.
It’s a place with character; books, fine spirits, and Ief behind the bar. A man with endless flair who makes an exceptional Negroni (featuring a secret ingredient he refuses to disclose - even to his favourite city guide). Just the perfect drink to calm your nerves in the middle of a complex 8-hour excursion.
While I was enjoying a moment of quiet, Tim and Karina walked in. They were sourcing authentic, local Belgian drinks with a story for guests aboard Delfine, a classic barge they were restoring for private river cruise charters.
Ief introduced us: "This is Yves - historian, storyteller, and private guide."
Within minutes, we were discussing guest expectations, local culture, and logistics over a drink. No PowerPoint, no sales pitch. Just the pure vibe of the moment, and alignment on what Belgian hospitality should look like.
